Loan services

Last updated: 13.6.2025

On this page, you will find tips for using the library’s loan services.

You need a library card to borrow printed materials. If you are studying fully online, you do not need a library card.

Students of Lapland University of Applied Sciences and the University of Lapland: You can find your library card in Tuudo under the “Library” tab. If you already have a Lapland University Consortium Library card, it will automatically update in Tuudo.

LUC staff: fill in the customer information form and follow the instructions provided. See the library section on the LUC Intranet.

Other customers: register here. You will receive your library card when you visit the customer service in Rovaniemi or Kemi. Please, bring your ID card with you.

Your library card is personal. When you get a library card, you agree to follow the library rules.
Borrow books and other materials using a self-checkout machine or at the service desk.

The loan periods for different materials vary:

• Books: 28 or 14 days
• Magazines and AV materials: 7 days
• Reading room collections: 0 or 1 day.

You can check the specific loan period for a title in LUC-Finna.

Requesting materials is free of charge. You can reserve books and magazines that:

• are located at another campus, or
• are currently all on loan.

You can cancel a request in LUC-Finna, if you have not received a pickup notification. If you have received a notification, cancel the request at the customer service desk.

Pick up your request from the self-service shelf and check it out using the self-checkout machine.

An uncollected reservation will incur a charge of €2.00. Please see the LUC Library Service price list.

You cannot request a book that:

• is available at your campus library,
• has a loan period of 0–1 days,
• you already have on loan, or
• you have already requested.

Renew your loans via LUC-Finna or Tuudo. You can renew the loan for up to 2 years.

You can also request renewals:

• at the customer service
• via chat
• by phone
• by email.

You cannot renew a loan if:

• the item has been requested by someone else.
• you are currently banned from borrowing.
• the item has been on loan to you for two years.

Return your loans to the nearest Lapland University Consortium Library unit in Kemi, Rovaniemi, or Tornio. Exception: reading room loans must be returned to University Library.

Use the self-checkout machine to return items during library opening hours. The receipt confirms that all items have been returned. A library card is not required.

Return Boxes
When the library is closed, you can return items to a return box. Please note:

• Return boxes are emptied on weekday mornings.
• Minerva Library return box is emptied once a week.
• During holidays, returns may be processed with delays.

Locations of return boxes:
